How To Choose a Great Personal Trainer

With the trend of personal training gathering speed, and more people struggling to achieve their fitness goals, an increasing number of individuals are looking to hire a personal trainer – great for the fitness industry, not always great for you.

Unfortunately, as the need for trainers has increased, many fitness trainers, without the proper training, experience or qualifications have jumped on the bandwagon, offering reduced-rate personal training to earn money.

Like I said – great for the fitness industry, not so great for you!

1. Experience

How long has your personal trainer been training and, more importantly, how many clients have they trained?

If they can’t give you an answer then this is your first warning that they might not be all they’re cracked up to be. Ask them if they’re still training some of those clients.

A good personal trainer can retain a client for years because a client who sees good results will want to keep achieving their goals (see our success stories here). But, if they’re not then they’ll stop using the trainer.

2. Knowledge

Through REPS (Register of Exercise Professionals), a personal trainer must complete a number of points of professional development each year. Does your trainer go on regular training courses to update themselves and their knowledge?

3. Assessment

If the personal trainer is not assessing you then they are guessing’ – (Paul Chek). If you aren’t being assessed for postural mechanics, body fat and your hormonal profile, ask why?

How do you really know how much progress you’re making?

Similarly, if your trainer doesn’t keep a regular check on your training programme then how do you know what improvements you’ve made?

4. Payment

How do they want you to pay?

If your trainer only accepts cash then think again. Protect yourself and your investment. Paying by bank transfer is much more secure and you can take steps to get your money back if something goes wrong.
